Most people are tempted to start looking at the scale as soon as they start exercising – checking it everyday. This is NOT what you want to do. Unless it’s pure water weight, nobody loses 5-10 pounds miraculously overnight. Progress takes time and an easy way to demotivate yourself is by looking at the scale daily. It’s much better to check the scale every 1-2 weeks to see if you are progressing. Remember, muscle weighs more than fat and our water weight changes daily, so the scale can be deceiving if you are checking it every hour or day. The mirror is a much better indicator.
- Focus on Yourself
Stop comparing your body to models and pro athletes. It’s great to admire their work and use them as motivation, but remember that these people have the advantage of professional trainers and nutritionists working with them. Every person is different and YOU should be your own #1 motivator. Do not get dragged down by what you think you’re supposed to look like. Have a goal, stick to it, and build upon it.
- Don’t Be Too Critical
No one is perfect. Everyone loses weight at their own pace, some faster than others. If you aren’t losing weight as fast as you’d hoped, do not give up! No one reaches their goals without bumps in the way. You mustn’t be too critical on yourself. Bringing yourself down will only dampen your motivation to lose weight.
Even if you didn’t reach your goal for a certain week, congratulate yourself on the work that you did accomplish. Was your goal to lose 6 pounds in a month but you only lost 4? Praise yourself because you still lost weight! This confidence will build and soon you will be blowing past your goals.
- Stay Busy
You still need to keep yourself busy when you’re not exercising and dieting! Constantly fretting about weight loss will only get you stressed. Enjoy your hobbies while on your weight loss journey. Also remember that losing weight and living healthy requires a committed lifestyle change. This means that even when you reach your goal you shouldn’t go back to your unhealthy habits.
- Get Support
You don’t have to be alone when trying to achieve your goals. Find a friend to join you in your healthy lifestyle! Having a workout partner has many benefits such as motivating each other – especially if someone is feeling down, feeling like they want to skip a day at the gym, or wanting to eat junk food.
